Before online dating, I’d go one date every couple months, maybe. Once I started swiping with purpose, I could land two or three dates a week. It wasn’t always easy and fun, but I did meet the guy of my dreams online, so I’d say all the problems were well worth it.

We’ll start with the bad news: Online dating is not foolproof. It does not work for everyone. Some people fold under the challenges of creating an attractive profile and vetting potential dates. They don’t know what to say in a first message or how to act on a first date, and they face rejection on a daily basis as a result.
We won’t sugarcoat how difficult online dating can be, but if you do your research and understand how it works, then you can make the right choices and avoid common mistakes.

We’re living in a society where we’re given a ton of choices and have to make a ton of decisions every day because of those choices. I don’t know about you, but for me, it gets to the point where I don’t want to make any decisions anymore. Do we really need a dating site just for people who are incarcerated? I know that old song says the best things in life are free, but that’s not necessarily true. Yes, most dating websites are 100% free or offer free trials or free memberships, but the best of the best require some kind of subscription payment if you want full access to everything. In many cases, communication or chatting features will be restricted to paid members only — that’s actually a good thing because it means only serious and authentic singles can reach out to each other.
Having said that, expensive doesn’t mean first-rate. We’ve seen some sites charge almost $200 for luxury online dating services, but we wouldn’t recommend them to our family and friends, which means we wouldn’t recommend them to you.
3. People Can Easily Lie About Themselves
It’s online dating — you’re alone with a laptop or smartphone, not face to face with someone. This makes it easier for some people to add a few inches to their height, take a few years off their age, or lie about something worse. More than half of online dating users admit to lying about something on their profiles. It could be they’re lying about their age or weight, or they could be hiding a relationship, a criminal history, or other skeletons in the closet. That’s why it’s important to vet people online and don’t get attached until you meet offline.
4. You’re Facing More Rejection More Frequently
In the real world, people typically face rejection one person at a time, but in online dating, that rejection can be multiplied with every swipe and message. There’s a reason ghosting has become so common in the dating scene. It’s easy to disappear on people you’ve never met and don’t really know — and leave a trail of broken hearts in your wake.

Remember, millions of singles are using dating websites, and there’s no way they could all like you. So there may be times — occasionally on a daily basis — when you’ll be turned down for a date or ghosted in a conversation, and you may never really know why. The best thing to do then is to move on to somebody who will like you back.
5. It Creates a Tendency to Compare Ourselves to Others
Before online dating came around, we just had beautiful, funny people in movies, TV shows, and magazines with whom to compare ourselves. Now online dating is included in that mix. You’re going to see people who seem to have better profiles than you, better pictures than you, more accomplishments to brag about than you, more interesting interests than you, and so on. Maybe they do; maybe they don’t. Your head could start to mess with you.
6. Two Words: Dick Pics
You can’t talk about online dating without talking about dick pics. Several friends of mine have received unsolicited photos of an online match’s Johnson. One was even just replying to a good morning text he’d sent! I’m sure you know someone or know someone who knows someone who’s also gotten a little more than they asked for, to put it kindly. Numerous studies and think pieces address why men do this, but I’m here to simply say it’s a problem.
7. Ghosting Becomes More Prevalent
If you think those no-thank-yous can be rough, imagine starting to like someone and then they just up and vanish, never to be heard from again. Similar to the lying, it’s easier to peace out on someone when you’re not looking them in the eye or hearing the disappointment in their voice.
Nearly 80% of single millennials say they have been ghosted before. So, at least you’re not alone. It happens, and it sucks, but it’s just part of the game.
8. It Can Take a Decent Amount of Time

Online dating can sometimes feel like a part-time job — the average single spends 10 hours a week online dating — except your efforts don’t always pay off right away. On my first foray on a dating site, I found a boyfriend within six dates. The next time I fired up my dating profile, it took me over a year to find someone I wanted to commit to, but, let me tell you, it was so worth the wait.
9. Scams Abound
In 2016, the FBI received almost 15,000 romance scam complaints — ranging from identity theft to fake emergencies and business investments. It’s no secret that the horrible people in the world who want to hurt the good ones — especially if they’re in a vulnerable situation such as being single and feeling lonely — ruin everything for them.
10. Stalkers, Pedophiles, Murderers & Other Predators
In addition to financial dangers you could face on a dating site, there have been reports of physical dangers as well, including stalking and murder. Also, according to Phactual.com, 10% of sex offenders use dating websites to meet people.
While a lot of dating websites verify their members in some way and/or conduct background checks, some do not, leaving all of the investigating to the members.
11. The “Grass is Always Greener” Mentality
We said it earlier — online dating gives you a lot of choices, which might not be so great if you’re plagued with indecision and don’t really know what you want. You could meet someone awesome, but “what about the others out there whom I haven’t met yet?” you ask yourself. “Is this really as good as it gets?”
I’m not trying to compare people to food, but it’s kind of like wishing you’d left room for dessert after eating too much from a buffet. You keep wondering how good the chocolate cake is and if you should’ve given up the mac and cheese for it.
12. People With Baggage Flock to It
Singles who have unresolved issues from a past relationship tend to be drawn to online dating to ease the pain. It’s so easy to get started in a new romance. This is especially true on sites like Tinder, where you could meet someone within minutes.

You’ll even notice it in profiles and messages. Some will have a laundry list of likes and dislikes (probably the opposite characteristics of what their ex possessed) or they’ll just flat-out talk about their ex in their About Me section or during your correspondence.
13. It Makes Us Pickier
This problem is similar to the “grass is always greener” mentality. It’s great that dating websites allow us to pick out our preferences, but there are those who tend to get carried away. You said you wanted someone at least 6 feet tall, but a nice guy you see happens to be two inches shorter. Does he still deserve a shot? You said you prefer girls with blue eyes, so does that mean green eyes are out of the question? You said you like people who are also interested in sports. However, if it’s soccer they’re passionate about instead of football, will you move on? At the end of the day, little things like that don’t really matter.
14. You Could Be Catfished
We’ve all heard of the show and the Manti Te’o story. Catfishing is when someone pretends to be someone they’re not (fake name, fake picture, fake location, fake history, etc.) to pursue a romantic relationship with an unknowing member of a dating site, social media network, or similar platform. 15. It Works Better for Some Than Others
Research shows black women often have the hardest time online dating. They’re often objectified, receive fewer replies to their messages, have to endure racist comments, and so on. 18. Get Offline As Soon As Possible
The best way to lure out a catfish or scammer is to arrange an in-person meeting as quickly as you can. If he or she keeps putting it off and giving you lame excuses, you have your answer. If the person in question agrees to meet, you should still take some precautions. Meet at the set location instead of having them pick you up or you picking them up, and let a friend know where you’re going to be.
19. Keep Your Private Information Private
If an online match is asking you for your personal information, such as your address and/or family members’ names, very early on, that’s a red flag. They don’t need to know that stuff yet, so politely decline but keep it in the back of your mind that they asked. Also, someone you don’t know asking for money is another thing to look out for. No matter how pitiful their story is, don’t give in.

A majority of dating websites will automatically set your paying membership to automatically renew, so you should keep an eye on that. If you decide you want to cancel but forget to pay before the month is up, you’re SOL. As we said, some services will charge you as much as a cable, internet, or cellphone bill, and the cost will add up if you don’t stay on your toes.
Take advantage of the free time a dating site gives you to explore and test everything out. You can upgrade if you decide it’s the one for you, or maybe you won’t even have to. A free dating site may provide you everything you need.
There’s no shame in getting frustrated with online dating and pressing the pause button for a little while. Your sanity will thank you!

'People who use their devices in public for presentations, demos, school, and work should at least use Incognito mode to make sure porn website addresses don’t get stored,' said Bogdan Botezatu, Director of Threat Research and Reporting at Bitdefender. We at PCMag, however, would recommend that any porn partakers use Incognito mode to protect themselves from embarrassment.
Is There Any Shame In Using A Dating Site To Find
While useful, it's worth noting that Incognito mode has limitations. 'Your searches, pages you visited, login details, and cookies will not be saved on the device after you close your private windows,' explained Daniel Markuson, digital privacy expert at NordVPN.
'However, [Incognito mode] doesn’t hide traffic from third parties, and it doesn’t secure traffic from hackers or other attacks and vulnerabilities. Your browsing data can still be collected by your ISP, your employer, and any other third party that can track your IP address,' said Markuson.
Sexy, Sexy Data
A more dramatic threat is data theft, which is unfortunately common in all industries. A data breach from an adult website might contain, 'private information such as chat conversations, transaction history or even video content preferences,' said Botezatu. 'This is likely to create a nightmare similar to what happened when Ashley Madison got leaked—people learned about the online whereabouts of spouses, employees and public persons, causing an unprecedented meltdown.' If info from a dating app (albeit one focused on cheating) can cause such a ruckus, imagine how much more sensitive data from porn sites is?
A savvy attacker may not even need to actually steal data in order to profit from it. 'Porn watchers might experience some blind blackmailing attempts where they receive messages claiming that hackers have gained access to the computer used for porn-binging and that they also managed to record the victim via the built-in webcam,' said Botezatu. 'This is a common claim and all [similar] messages should be immediately deleted.'
A variant on this kind of scam is called 'sextortion,' where the attacker blackmails the victim into providing explicit images of themselves. These can then be used to further pressure the victim. While scammers may be bluffing, it's a good idea to keep your webcam covered when not in use, and to use local antivirus to guard against any snooping software.
In some places, what would be considered legal pornography in the US is outright banned, and accessing it could lead to complications with law enforcement. In those situations, a VPN would be a useful tool, but we must stress that we are not advocating breaking any laws, which can have serious consequences.
Guarding Your Spicy Traffic
Mass data collection is big business (in fact, it's pretty much the only big business online, apart from affiliate sales), and incentivizes the collection of enormous amounts of highly detailed personal information. In the US, the list of organizations hungry for your data includes your internet service provider (ISP).
The pornography you consume doesn't need to be anyone's business but your own, and in this sense a VPN is extremely useful. '[A] VPN reroutes internet traffic through a remote server and hides the IP address, preventing websites from seeing the visitor’s original IP or location,' explained Markuson. 'A VPN also encrypts traffic exchanged between the internet and your device. This means that nobody, including your ISP, can see what you’re doing online.'
A great way to protect your data is to simply never provide it. Privacy services like Abine Blur and others let you create disposable email addresses, phone numbers, and even credit card numbers on the fly. The disposable email addresses are particularly useful since you can generate a new, unique address for each service, making it much harder to tie accounts back to you.
Similarly, disposable credit card numbers are harder to link directly to you, and are effectively a one-time use payment. Additionally, you use Abine's address as the billing address, meaning you'll never have to hand over this sensitive information to a porn site. 'They can also facilitate cancellation, which many adult sites make intentionally complicated to retain customers and can be a source of embarrassment for consumers,' said Rob Shavell, Co-Founder and CEO of Abine. 'Since, really, who wants to explain why you’re disputing a questionable charge from your favorite adult site?'
Websites can track your movements in a variety of ways, but the method is largely the same: find (or assign) a unique identifier to a visitor, and then wait to see where else that identifier turns up. Tracker blockers break the cycle by preventing ads and sites from IDing you, making it much harder to follow you from site to site. Stand-alone tracker blockers, such as Ghostery Midnight or the EFF's Privacy Badger, are excellent, especially when paired with a privacy-conscious web browser that has its own tools, such as Firefox.
Note that these tools can sometimes break site functionality, particularly custom video players. Privacy Badger, for instance, lets you toggle specific trackers on and off, which can usually fix the issue. Firefox has less flexibility, but can likewise be tuned for specific situations.
More than particular tools, Shavell encourages people to take the time to understand what privacy settings exist in their browsers. 'Most have tools to block javascript, pop-ups, and to flush cookies every time you close [your browser]. Basic practices like this go a long way to improving overall browsing safety.'
Another avenue for attack are phishing sites. These are malicious websites that prompt you to enter personal information, and then use it for nefarious ends. A common tactic is to disguise a phishing site as a bank login screen, thus tricking victims into parting with their financial login information. A phishing site can also masquerade as a pornographic website, harvesting credit card numbers and personal information for fraud, or contact information for spam. Most web browsers are fairly adept at detecting phishing sites, and antivirus software even more so. If your browser or your security software says that a titillating URL is dangerous, it's best to listen.
Use (Antivirus) Protection
Even if a pornographic website takes great care to protect its users, it can still become an unwitting vector for attack. 'There are some cases where malicious advertisements are bought from small advertising companies and displayed on porn websites,' said Botezatu. He explained that this is an issue not just for porn sites, but any place that sells ad space. 'Unfortunately, users can’t immediately tell when malicious activity takes place on the respective websites, and this is why a security solution running in the background is highly recommended.
'If anything malicious is hosted on the respective page, it will automatically be blocked.'

'When looking for explicit content, users might end up on phishing sites or may click on ads that lead to downloading malware or ransomware,' wanted Markuson. He advised to avoid downloading pornographic content, and instead stream it (via a VPN, naturally).
More Than Just a Pretty Face
Beyond societal shame, there's a reason why pornographic websites have a spotty reputation. 'In the wild-west days of the early internet (late 90s-2000s), there was an explosion of adult sites, many of which were quickly slapped together and were just trying to make a quick buck any way they could,' recalled Shavell. 'This included implementing outright scams, such as distributing ransomware, viruses, or adware that sent your browser into endless click generating pop-up cycles.'
All the experts we spoke to for this story told some variation of the same tale, concluding that, in general, adult sites are safer now than they used to be. Still, the shady tactics used in the early days of online adult entertainment are still red flags to watch out for. Opening numerous windows or leading you down endless trails of links to access content, for example, is a bad sign.
Many of the experts we spoke with warned against small, 'fringe' sites peddling pornographic material. They advised sticking with well-known names in the industry, which are more likely to take care when handling personal information. Things like contact information, a business address, and a privacy policy can be signs that a site is on the up-and-up.
Shavell also warned against using logins for pornographic sites that might be shared on forums or elsewhere. 'These simply tend to be teasers to lure people to the worst sort of scam-sites.'

Markuson points out that any website could be dangerous, so use the same scrutiny that you would for a pornographic site. 'Users should check if the URL of the website begins with HTTPS and has a padlock icon next to it. If it’s just HTTP, the site is not secure.'
Try to Be Cool
It's also important to keep a cool head, even when handling hot content. 'Many consumers of pornography exercise poor judgment while browsing because they’re in an excited state. Biology takes over and users overlook risks they’d normally pay attention to,' said Shavell. The checkered past of pornographic sites can also set a dangerous expectation that customers should expect some level of shadiness. Shavell recommends being extra cautious, and to listen to warnings from your computer or browser if it detects something untoward.
Lastly, consider your context. Browsing pornography on a work computer, or while using a work-provided VPN—even while quarantined at home—can land you in serious trouble. It's also not a good idea to involve other people in your private fantasies, without their express consent and in an appropriate way. Basically, don't slide into random DMs or be creepy with your colleagues, and be respectful to the sex workers whose content you partake.
